“ALINVEST VERDE” PROJECT – EL SALVADOR

ALIVEST-VERDE (Full title "Innovations and development for the green economy") is a project of the European Union, started in December 2022, with a duration of 26 months.

The project is located in the departments of La Unión and San Miguel with a population of 785.314 inhabitants, whose economy is concentrated in basic grain production activities: corn, beans, rice, as well as semi-permanent crops such as fruit trees, and vegetables.

In this territory, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock promotes a support program for fruit and vegetable producers with investments in equipment and infrastructure, considering the purpose of the proposed project would be a catalyst to take advantage of these investments and promote innovative chaining processes and sustainable, in fact, at this moment LEDA La Unión forms the technical table for fruits and vegetables of La Unión and San Miguel, which is a space to coordinate actions.

Its general objective is to promote competitive, inclusive, sustainable and resilient value chains that allow the generation of employment and the efficient use of resources in the departments of La Unión and San Miguel.

The specific objective is to implement innovative and sustainable technologies in the value chains of vegetables, fruits and honey that allow sustainable growth at benefit 250 MSMEs and producers of the vegetable, fruit and honey value chains in the departments of La Unión and San Miguel.

The Project is led by the Local Economic Development Agency of the Department of La Unión (ADEL La Unión), and, in addition to ILS LEDA, includes the participation of the Italian National Research Council, through the Center for Mediterranean Studies, and the Salvadoran University Gerardo Barrios, through the Green Observatory for Sustainable Development

The expected results are:

  • Three strategies for the competitive, inclusive, sustainable and resilient development of the vegetable, fruit and honey value chains in the departments of La Unión and San Miguel, elaborated in accordance to the ILS LEDA RESCO methodology
  • 250 organized producers and other local actors in the departments of La Unión and San Miguel in value chain and territorial technical roundtables
  • 200 producers who implement sustainable agricultural practices adapted to MSMEs and small producer organizations.
  • 200 producers and MSMEs participate in spaces for technical and commercial dialogue, exchange of information, innovation and research

ILS LEDA will contribute to achieve the results 1), 2), and 4

An interesting aspect of the project is its sustainability due to multiple factors, such as:

  1. The sustainability of MSMEs, which is based on business plans that show the feasibility of innovations
  2. The incorporation of factors of environmental sustainability, circular economy, climate change mitigation in the development strategies of value chains
  3. The support from LEDA La Unión that assumes the task of facilitating the implementation of the strategies, in addition to having the support of the Gerardo Barrios University through the environmental observatory.
  4. The constitution of value chain roundtables, which represent the place where entrepreneurs, together with other actors, express their needs and difficulties, learn from each other about best practices, decide on common actions, monitor the impact of strategies and They propose adjustments.
